Yup, took me a while when I was a kid to get used to the tone controls, I thought they were really strange when I first bought my first one. Most people that I've talked to who don't like them have never owned one, they take some time getting used to.

So, are there any 'secrets' you want to devulge to us young kids so we don't have to wait till we grow up to truly understand how to properly set up an SVT?

Ummm... I guess buy a nice old one and, umm..... get used to it

But seriously that has been my experience anyway. I do realize they are not for everyone though. I think my original point was that comparing a combo amp (any) to a behemoth like an SVT is not a fair comparison although usually the behemoth would come out on top (especially if it fell over .

Yes there is a secret. Start with all tone controls flat, the gain at about 10:00 and the master at about 11:00. First adjust master, then gain(watching to never go too high) and then adjust tone. Most folks overdrive the gain unless they know.

Only one thing wrong, old Ampegs have no master volume. I feel old now.
