It's a slothead EB-3 with the pickup covers off, made from 1969 to 1971, there is a better shot of it in this video:

Looks like he played it through all or much of 1972 as every video I watched from that period has it. The article is very good by the way, seems like a humble man, rare in this business. I don't think he realized how good he really was.

Hey, sounds like an argument for building a THREE pickup Rick bass :D :D :D !

I always thought the Gibson Ripper bass had was ugly. Even the name is weird.

Chicago is about all I've been listening to lately. If it were possibly to wear out CDs, I'd have gone through 3 or 4 sets. I love Lowdown, even though it is kind of sappy. In the Country is great, too. Come to think of it, all the old stuff is great! I've got both volumes of Chicago, Transcribed Scores and wish they'd come out with more. Maybe they aren't selling, though.

Fuse showed one of the more recent Chicago concerts and I almost cried. The guy they have singing Kath's stuff sounds like he is trying out for a boy band and I'm not a big fan of their bass player (is it Scheff?). They're still selling albums and tickets, though, so somebody must like them.

Ok, so a P bass mostly. How about amps? Anyone know what was used? Old Sunn or Fender stuff? Ampeg? Direct to the board?

I have always loved the outro on the love version of Lowdown.

I remember reading somewhere that Cetera was the bass player very early on for Aorta.
