Although some people might find its numerous references to "Alice In Wonderland" imagery as nightmarish, I think many more might find them intriguing. The lyrics also seem clearly to be encouraging the use of drugs for mind expansion. While we know they were probably promoting the use of so-called soft drugs like psychedelics, they don't differentiate between those and more dangerous hard drugs. In summary, I doubt anyone was ever dissuaded from drug experimentation as a result of listening to "White Rabbit".
I always thought that was about the hypocrisy of the squares taking all kinds of subscription pills like BC pills and coming down on the hippies for taking little trips.

Both White Rabbit and Mothers Little Helper were what you say Bob. They were about the "establishment's" hypocrisy on prescription vs illegal drugs.

It isn't a rock'n'roll song, but Needle of Death by Ian Tyson should be on the list. God knows country music has had its share of cases.

Charly and Bob: I stand by my comments. This was supposed to be a list of songs about the evils of drugs. I agree that "Mother's Little Helper" and "White Rabbit" (to a much lesser degree) both concern the hypocrisy of legal vs. illegal drugs, but neither of these discourage the use of illegal drugs. The Stones wrote a bouncy song in the style favored by Ray Davies' for social commentary ("Dedicated Follower Of Fashion" or "Well Respected Man") whereas Jefferson Airplane used a trippy psychedelic sound to catch the listeners' attention. While I think "White Rabbit" is a terrific song, I do not think it ever discouraged anyone from drug experimentation.

Nate... more like 90% of the A.I.C. catalog! I miss Layne's singing something huge.

Here's one out of nowhere... surprising since I'm not ordinarily a fan of his...

"Captain Jack" Billy Joel

Well it's best just to get one album insead of a whole catalogue to listen to songs about drugs. Much cheaper that way. :D

Ringo Starr's "No-no" song is another good example although he delivers the message in a Humerous way.

A lady that i know just came from columbia,
She smiled because i did not understand.
Then she held out some marijuana, ha ha!
She said it was the best in all the land.

And i said,
"no, no, no, no, i don't smoke it no more,
I'm tired of waking up on the floor.
No, thank you, please, it only makes me sneeze,
And then it makes it hard to find the door."

(ah-ah-aye-aye)

A woman that i know just came from majorca, spain,
She smiled because i did not understand. (parazzi! Parazzi!) (ole!)
Then she held out a ten pound bag of cocaine,
She said it was the finest in the land.

And i said,
"no, no, no, no, i don't sniff it no more,
I'm tired of waking up on the floor.
No, thank you, please, it only makes me sneeze,
And then it makes it hard to find the door."

(aye-aye-aye-aye)
(aye-aye-aye-aye)
(aye-aye-aye-aye)
(aye-aye-aye)

A man that i know just came from nashville, tennessee, oo, (oh no!)
He smiled because i did not understand.
Then he held out some moonshine whiskey, oh ho,
He said it was the best in all the land. (and he wasn't joking!!!)

And i said,
"no, no, no, no, i don't drink it no more,
I'm tired of waking up on the floor.
No, thank you, please, it only makes me sneeze,
And then it makes it hard to find the door."

Well, i said,
"no, no, no, no, i can't take it no more,
I'm tired of waking up on the floor.
No, thank you, please, it only makes me sneeze,
And then it makes it hard to find the door."

Hey yeh!

"i'll just have another drink, barman, have you got a large brandy?"

"Sex and Drugs and rock N roll
Is all my brain and body need
Sex and Drugs and Rock N roll
Is very good indeed."

Not really a song about the evil part of doing drugs if he's saying that he can't do without it.
