I drive an Audi Quattro and even with performance tires on it, I've never had to change to anything more suited for going around on ice and snow, but that speaks more to the car than the tires. In other applications, I would suggest to have two sets of wheels and tires. One set for most of the year, and usually a performance tire of some sort, and then your winter tires on another set of wheels. Something like Blizzacks are very good. There is a swedish tire too that I don't recall the name of that is a very good winter tire.

I have Goodyear Integrity tires on my Lacrosse. They are extremely quiet as is the whole car. They seem to do ok in the winter as well.

When I owned my VW R32 (AWD Haldex system.....same as Audi TT) I was amazed by how stellar it performed in the snow with proper tires. For the summer I had the stock Goodyear F1 tires that were unbelievable in the rain but a little soft for hard cornering. For winter I used Dunlop WinterSports and could drive through the worst snow and ice almost like it was dry. To launch hard on a sheet of ice and barely get any wheel spin is pretty interesting.

I am a very spirited driver. I have took turns I never though possible with these tires. They are pretty good in the rain too for being summer tires.
Sounds like great tires for So Cal but John sees snow, something you may not be familiar with.
