John, you can bet on that! :D Her wood grain is just too marvellous to be covered with jetglo.
I also asked Paul to give her the pre-'73 conversion (FWMOPI and CBB) and he will turn her into a 21-fretter!!!
If Paul will find the time, he might show some pics of his artwork procedure on my lady!

John, what was the serial number on that baby? I'm presuming the HS was original to the bass, correct?

Pete...No skunk on the '69's...

Andy, that's why I don't buy any 4001 rick further back than 1972. :D

Pete,

You could always paint a racing stripe down the middle on an old one!

Gee-
I didn't know that this was for "Skunks Only!"
Any way-
I wish I still had it. I sold it to Darryl Jones and I think it
ended up at CMI for a while....
The HS was from a 40s steel, but the coil was the snot colored
one from that bass....
Going against the Skunks Only theme, here's a shot of the
69 4001JG(bad refin) that Good Guys had that nobody wanted....

John,

Was that the one that was FG over JG, and possibly from the factory?

Yep- that's the one. And it was NOT factory JG .
Unless they were allowing the family cat in the
spray booth cause the JG was full of cat hairs!
Still, a very neat bass in need of a little love.
Notice the pre-68 truss routs in the body.
I think the woodwork might have been done
way earlier than when final assembly was done.
The lack of the step like volute also helps my suspicion....

Don't you know cat hair was a premium option? Yeah, they used it as a fiber re-enforcement filler! It added sustain by strengthening the body and neck. That's why Macca's didn't sound as good after he had the factory finish removed.
(Or something like that!)

Right Jeff...

I shouldn't be typing at 6am without the wake up call of at least 16+ oz's of coffee...
