Great clip! I love this stuff. The whole "Pilgrimage" album is incredible.

Isn't that a typical sound of a capped 4001? The neck pickup dominates the overall sound when played mono.
The song is "Vas Dis" (by Jack McDuff) from their second album "Pilgrimage" (1971). Some claim (Martin Turner included) that "Argus" was recorded using a Rickenbacker but I still do not believe it. It just doesn't sound like it. It sounds like a Thunderbird to me which he started using at that time.

No, he probably has the neck pickup dialed up. The cap takes the low-end away but does not reduce the volume of the treble pickup.

I know they were 'hazy' times but I would have though he knew what bass he had at the time!
Funny thing was that I always wanted a T Bird at that time because of Wishbone Ash, but as the re issues didn't come till 1976 they were way out of my price, so I bought the next best thing, a 4001 JG.

Nice to see the ultimate Rickenbacker bass in capable hands.
And yes, it sounds definitely like only the neck pickup on it is on.

I opened for them in 1981 at a club called The Shaboo in CT, don't remember what kind of bass they had, I do remember the flying V though. I was never a big fan of them as I knew nothing of them, probably my loss.

He may have just the neck pickup in the mix but I know with my old bass that if the cap is in (I've bypassed it) the difference between just the neck and both on is very little...
