was the one w/ the non original pups the one on ebay last December?

Not sure Bryce,,Jdog sold it to me.

Nice basses all round.

I though Christmas was last month!

Very nice instruments, Bryce and Kevin. I talked to Tony today and he said the 4002 sounded spectacular and looked like it came out of the past in a time machine as there was not a mark on it.

I wonder if Ted would chime in and report on how his 4002 conversion project is going?

Oh man, what a bass! I never really cared TOO much for 4002's before, but NOW, I'm ruined!

What a beauty! You hit a home run on this one Bryce. You have NO IDEA how difficult it was getting her back in the box and sent off to you so quickly! I REALLY wanted to spend some more quality time with her (I mean, how often does one have a 4002 in your home as a guest) but I felt it was better just to get it off to you ASAP.

Tony, for all the help you've given me on this one, the advise and counselling, the shipping services, etc - you definitely deserve first crack at it if i part with it!

Bryce, a 4002 is different than a 4001/3 or a 4004, but make no mistake, it is all Rick. You will be very pleased.

today's the day...both basses should arrive at my work this afternoon.

To set expectations, the 4002 isn't exactly a time machine piece...it's nice, but it has a few scuffs, dents and nicks...but not that you'd notice overmuch. Think 'patina' bought on by natural wear and tear, not abuse. No buckle rash.

October 1977 makes this 4002 the earliest example I know of. Older units may be out there, but I've really been looking over the years and have not found one older. Most of the time we see the '80s models with the thicker body horns and '80s headstock, which is fine. This bass looks and feels like it had been built VERY early on, but not finished off until it was needed. It also weighs in at nearly 11 pounds, so while it may look a little petite, some very dense wood was used in its construction.

I have always made it a point to improve on any instrument I purchase, even if new. This particular bass had far more care and concern lavished over it than any other RIckenbacker I have ever owned. And, while I still think it can be improved on, it's time to pass the torch.

well, the improvements will start tomorrw as the '77 tailpiece w/ no lift is sitting by the case to be installed tomorrow.

You had me quite concerned when you first told me that you didn't like the 4002. I thought Janey should get you to a doctor, FAST!

Everybody seems to get excited about the 4002, and I like that Walnut 4001 a lot. Especially with the white/black double binding. That must be pretty rare. Great looking bass.
