Glad she's there safe. My 68 hi-gain is weak too, just the way they were made, wound low, and of course, mine has the cap in!

You could get another guard and toaster and switch it out to a 4001, and that's quite possibly without mods, or, you can simply leave be and enjoy a great old bass...

As to the thin tone, just replace the hi-gain with a P Bass pickup, problem solved!

How about adding 3 EB-3 pu's? They might just fit!

It has light gage rounds of an unknown variety, but the neck it dead straight. It seems very solid for such a tiny neck.

Is it better than a V63? I don't know about better, but there are some things that a new instrument isn't. It feels old and broken in like a favorite pair of jeans. The neck is incredible. One of the best I've felt. It's light and resonant.

Seriously though Kevin, Use light gauges, nickel rounds, 45, 55, 70 95 or similar and she will last forever. This will keep the tension a low as is practicable. A standard Ric set (I think) is 45, 55, 80, 105. Don't use Roto's or Pyramids or flats etc.
