A 4003 was my first *real* bass as well, but I was so young at the time (16) that there was really no "adjusting", because I really didn't know any better - I just knew I liked Rickenbackers. :)

Consequently, I have difficulty adjusting to ANY other bass. It's mostly a matter of "Where the heck do I keep my thumb?", but also having trouble with tones as well.

I recently put together a Fender Jazz from a body I had and a neck I bought, and gigged with it a few times, mostly because I thought it would be cool for the more funky stuff that we do. I find myself constantly moving my right hand around looking for the "sweet spot", but never really finding it; i've compromised by leaving my thumb on the bridge pickup, but it's not exactly comfy. I also know that I like the sound of a Fender Jazz, but I have just been unable to tame the thing. The treble has been out of control, especially after my last gig - I can honestly say that i've played my last gig EVER with roundwound strings! I'm going to see if a set of Chromes can tame the trebly Jazz, otherwise i'll have to look into some different pickups, or something.

Is it any surprise that i'll only be bringing my v68 and my v63 tonight? :)

My ’74 4001 and it was just totally the right fit in ’74 and is now. The only real adjustment to a Ric I had was with my 4003s5. The pitch of the strings took a little getting used to with my picking hand.
