Hi Dane,

Yeah, I noticed your surround there, and went back through the archives to see how you'd put it together. My "long-taper" has ended up looking very similar, which is helpful for justifying the effort! :)

I have thought of doing an 8-string potatohead conversion too, and almost started to on my '76 disaster until I realised that the neck had actually been cracked and nailed back together at the heel (!!!!). So, until I can start with a fresh 4003 with a nice solid neck, I'll have to wait. In the meantime, I have a Hamer B12S that fills the "octave bass" role nicely.

Oh, and I did end up notching the sides of both surrounds. I know, peer pressure....

What peer pressure? Not around here? 8)

Not a bit sir.

By the way, Jeff, do you still have that surround, and, if so, would you be willing to do a tracing of it for me? I have a wacky idea I'd like to see about. I would gladly reimburse your time, trouble and postage....

I sold it to VG a couple years ago but I did make a tracing for Gerry Beckles (who seems to have disappeared), and Dana Wilder; he should still have it.

Jeff...you did NOT just misspell my name!

Paul, PM me with your address and I'll mail you a copy...if I still have it... and I think I do.

i did my v'63 surround back in '85 a la squire on a drill press with a milling bit,(the same milling bit and the same time i modified my aluminum tailpieces to accept the current post '73 saddle bridge) it took me about ten minutes and was more stable to use. less chance for "oopsing !"

download/file.php?id=29504&mode=view

the tail of the surround is a little bit wider than the width of the tailpiece.
