my drummer's got a mental block

I swear, the beer and a boob comment describes 95% of the drummers within 100 miles of me. And, yup, NYC is that close. That's ALOT of drummers!

I agree with Phil. The drummer can make or break a band faster than any other instrument (with exception of vocals). Still, most drummers are pretty unique creatures. Perhaps they are created in a laboratory somewhere?

I think the short-coming of many of the drummers I hear is that they don't play musically. They're bashing around on cymbals, and using the tom-toms way too much, throwing in fills that don't work and don't belong at all, when they should be doing some shorter, crisp fills with the snare and hi-hat, using "sticking". I guess you really can't teach that. Anyway, many of the drummers I hear are not playing to the song, they seem like they're trying to impress everyone, when what they should be trying to do is to be unobtrusive. Like Phil Selway from Radiohead - he never does a single thing ever that distracts me from the song I am listening to - great drummer.
