Re: Southern Rock
I'll throw out another name, Steve Gaines, from Tulsa, Oklahoma. I got to know him when he played with The Rusty Day [Cactus] Band in Detroit, before he joined L.Skinyrd. Great guy, great guitarist. A short time later he died in the plane crash with his sister Cassey and Ronnie Van Zant. He made their last album the best one they did, IMHO.

I could not agree more with that sentiment, but for some reason it keeps drawing me back. So does KFC but that's a whole other matter.antipodean wrote:I find Southern Rock a lot like fried chicken - highly enjoyable but not something you can safely indulge in every day.

Frank Zappa did a great parody of Southern Rock on his Joe's Garage album. It's worth a listen, especially for anyone who takes themselves and their music of choice too seriously.

Re: Southern Rock
While I always appreciated some of the classic southern rock songs, I never was really a fan. I am however, a huge Gov't Mule - Warren Haynes fan, which has it's roots there but goes so many other places.

Southern Bands seem to get quite creative with their album covers. Here are a couple of examples.
