They are not terribly difficult to remove. You just have to be careful not to munge the plating. The factory uses a pair of front-cutting pliers with a semi-circular notch machined into each blade. When they are sqeezed closed they grab the part of the strap button that the strap hangs on. The setup guy on duty during our 75th Anniversary visit showed it to me. A very simple and elegant solution.

Close thing chief!
Try the black plastic Jim Dunlop strap locks.
They are very secure and you dont need any surgery to put them on the bass.
AND they are cheap!
