I love the Lollar I have in my 4001. It's very low output and reedy, but it colors the sound of the toaster beautifully. Here's a clip of me playing the Lollar equipped 4001. I'm playing a Rezillos song, Flying Saucer Attack. There's a chance that I may have to do a fill in gig or two with them next year if their regular guy can't do a few dates. It was only right therefore to learn the songs.

Yup....should have snagged it last time it came up; this is the second time this pup has been at auction. He actually knocked it down $100 from the initial listing a few weeks ago. Last time I spoke with Jason he said that he has no idea when he'll be producing these again. He dropped them from his line as he wasn't satisfied with the quality of the shoes he was getting. Hopefully, he'll resolve that issue soon enough. Nice score, Jake!

Why, whatever are you alluding to John?

I for one have an old horseshoe pickup that sounds great. It is loud and punchy and completely original as far as I can tell. They are not for everyone but can produce when used properly.

Clanky! I like it. Very different from the tone I've been getting from the '72 so far (fingerstyle), as well as the Shadow, which may help me justify to the wife why I need two Rickenbackers. It sounds like it'd cut through pretty well.

Perhaps a stupid question -- is there anything special I need to know about this pickup relative to standard pickups, as regards installation? I can't solder at all, and I'm not sure my guitar tech will have seen too many of these. I'd guess it's a standard swap, but doesn't hurt to ask.

This makes me certain (for the xxxx'st time) that I love the way Rickenbacker 400x basses sound. What strings do you use?

On this bass, I'm using Rickenbacker .45 roundwounds. Most of my basses have those on these days, except for the 4001S which has rotosounds, because I love the cut on them, and I had a set lying around . I used Pyramids in the past, but the sound and longevity of them was really no better than the Rick strings for twice the price, and once you have a bunch of basses, cost is a consideration !

Nope, just drop that puppy in. As I learned from experience and Paul W though, you'll need a powerful soldering iron (40W and above) to get the old solder off and the new on. RIC uses solder that could glue a battleship together.

One thing you might consider is doing the cap bypass to give the Lollar a little more transparency, or fitting the new RIC push/pull pot instead. I'm going to do that on this RIC next time I change the strings.
