Another band that seriously sold out was Grand Funk, after the We're an American Band album, when they dropped the "Railroad" part of their name.

The entire music industry after Frampton Comes Alive and the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. Then it recovered in the 80's if you ignore hair metal and then after Nirvana and Pearl Jam it's been flat lined in the ICU.

I can't think of just one, so here are some nominations:

Prince - after he changed his name to the symbol;
Michael Jackson - When he started haveing facial surgery after "Off the Wall";
Madonna - when she first came on the scene. Some say she never jumped the shark - she is the shark;
Genesis - matter of opinion when. Some will say immediately post Gabriel. Others when Phil Collin's solo career "took off";
Macca - again, there'll be a diversity of opinion as to when. "Pipes of Peace" is my pick;
Sting - when he went solo, although it took three albums for it to be really obvious;
AC/DC - When Angus got really wrinkly - the whole schoolboy thing started to get very creepy;
Alice Cooper - After "Lace and Whisky" - he really looked like he was trying too hard.

There's so many too choose from!

They may have dropped the Railroad name for legal reasons.

Mark Farner told the story during an interview. When they reupped their management contract, they asked the manager to leave the room, so they could talk. By accident, he opened a drawer, and saw the contract the manager had with the record company, which was much different then what they had been told.

They then told the manager they wanted to fire him. He informed them, that if they did that, he still owned lots of rights, all their equipment, and their name. A deal was cut so the band could stay alive. Not sure of the timing, but that could have been the cause.

Love GFR. Anyone that wants to learn how to play bass from records, Grand Funk is a great pace to start.

Now that you've given a link, i know of two. But yes, seriously, what is so wrong with posting the same message in different forums? Is this what we call "spam"? Or is there any other reason?
Back to the topic, my candidate — Faith no More.

The Jefferson Airplane’s short but storied history is filled with countless examples of complete sheer serendipity and almost fatal turbulence (pun somewhat intended).

Readers of this forum have, by now I’ll assume, come to the easily acquired realization that I am a true-blue dyed-in-the-wool unabashed, unashamed Airplane admirer. But the Airplane do not need me to either apologize or defend them.
I will just say that what might appear to be a master plan to cash in on one good’s name and reap the benefits of schlock 80s pop music is quite an inaccurate observation.

There was never any grand master plan. The origins of the Jefferson Starship were, in fact, firmly planted in the free-love, free-music hippiedom philosophy of the late 60s and early 70s.

The band’s amorphous beginnings was a very loose conflagration of musical friends known as the Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra (PERRO). It would be hard to find a more non-commercial enterprise.
And the first album that contained the name “Jefferson Starship” (Blows Against the Empire) included 20-minute musical suite complete with rocket engine sound effects.

After, first Marty, and then Jorma and Jack officially left the band what was Paul to do? Retire in his rocking chair at age 30? So, he formed a band and went on as best he could.

Though I’ll never state that (even the early) JS was anything remotely great as the Airplane I will say that the “hits” that the general public is mostly aware of was only a very small portion of the output that the band produced. If one takes the effort to listen to Sunfighter, Baron von Tollbooth, Red Octopus, etc. one will find a lot of very good rock music there. All-time-great all-universe classics? No. But not all drek either.

The “We Built This City” era with Mickey Thomas was the beginning of the end and which has resulted in yet another legal wrangling that continues to this day.

Prologue: Paul and a band called Jefferson Starship are still touring. And other than the Marty Balin love songs (when he’s able to join them) the only one song they perform from this period is “Jane” (being sung by David Freiberg). And let me tell you, it rocks the house.

I disagree. This band always wanted to experiment with all sorts of music, some as parody and some serious. They wanted to prove they could do anything. And this is the band the was banned from my hometown because Mike stuck a mic up his behind. I bet he still would. WHILE doing this song. Just to prove you wrong.
