Wouldn't that be true only for open strings? When you fret a string, the nodes move.

Thanks for the advise guys. This bass is my keeper so I'm not worried about resale value. I just want to do a decent job. Even though you can't see the route, I'll always know it's there!

Yes, that is correct! But something remains changed in the tone due to the placing of the pickups... (that is the mystery bit)! At least it is fair to say that the open string harmonics sound a bit more prominent on a 1/2" spaced bass..
