I caught their video of "Lover of the Bayou" on their YouTube channel. I was quite surprised to see Tom paying a Rick bass. I didn't know he could play bass, too. Great version, btw.

I believe Tom was heard saying, "If that John Hall gets to play bass in his group, why can't I do it in Mudcrutch?", so the band let him.

Tom was the bass player in the original Mudcrutch.

I've got tickets for the LA Troubador show on Friday - the place maybe holds 200 people. Should be great. Also have tickets for the Heartbreakers at the Hollywood Bowl in June, but I think Friday will be a better show all around. Mudcrutch just updated their website with the album and videos to enjoy. First I've heard of the album - great stuff!

I've really enjoyed this thread, and it was nice to see Petty playing the Ric bass in the most recently posted youtube video.

I remember seeing an old Mudcrutch photo of him playing a Ric bass with a beard. Looks like he has come full circle now. Kind of cool.

Got the album. It's some great stuff! Benmont also gets a lead vocal that we've been waiting for after some time!

I'm not sure what songs Tom used his new 4001C64, '60s 4005, '70s 4001 and his Hofner Club on, but all I can say is he makes the bass growl, no matter what he's using.

Definately glad to see they've been revived!

The show was fantastic, as expected. I think they were as shocked as we were to be playing in such a small venue. Bootleg Flyer, The Wrong Thing To Do and Don't Scare Easy were definitely highlights, not to mention a few standard Dylan covers that any self respecting 70's bar band know - Rainy Day Women and another, which I don't recall at the moment. (it was a good night). Word is as the run at the Troubador went on through the weekend, it only got better. Needless to say, if your at all a Tom Petty fan, it's a show to see - they're there until 5/2 now - added a few more dates.

As for Rick's, the only appearance was by a 330 shaped blue burst mandolin - Tom stuck to his Hofner bass, and Mike switched between a tele and a firebird, and the mando. I'll upload a pic from my phone in the next few days.

Yeah, and now I see why he switched to guitar and got a real bass player for the Heartbreakers.

The following video has to be some of the worst technique and bass playing I've ever seen:

Granted (as I posted on another forum) Petty has earned just a few more dollars in his lifetime than I have.
But this gives bass playing a band name.
