Yeah, I'm rather old fashioned that way, too. I like holding the CD in my hand. Quite a bit of what I know about folk music I learned from reading liner notes on LP jackets or CD inserts.

I loved the old lp covers with all the art work to look over when ya bought it,brill.

But i stopped buying them a good while ago,they where just taking up to much space.
I still have a turntable ,nothing special, just a 20 odd year old Rega Planar 2,its nice though.
All my other Hi-Fi gear is Marantz,amp tuner,cd ,i even have a tape deck,remember them!

I don't download ,i just copy my stuff onto the pc, but i don't trust them,so i end up with more copies!
But i just can't get rid of the lp's either ,so ..........

Me too Jerry. The artwork was able to be seen, the text read without a magnifying glass, and you got to get up out of the chair and flip the record over every 20 minutes or so. No wonder we were in better shape back then!

A question for all the vinylholics out there - how many times while listening to some really relaxing music late at night via headphones did you wake up listening to the leadout groove?!

And of course double album and/or album covers that folded out were just made for...

Even though I'm a pretty young guy, I've been a slightly obsessed with vinyl over the past couple of years. I don't have much of a collection, probably less than 300, but plenty to enjoy. When I was in high school I started collecting some, more as memorabilia than for listenting. But I finally got a new turntable a few years back, and when I dropped that needle on Jethro Tull's "Heavy Horses" for the first time I was smitten. Even though it's not as clear as high quality digital stuff, it definitely has it's charm. And the cover art is the clincher. When I was going through a Peter Gabriel phase about a year ago, I picked up a lot of PG LP's on ebay. And WOW, I just had to stare at those first 2 albums for a while. It's just much more impressive in a 12"x12" presentation than on a little CD booklet. Also, LP's kinda force you to listen to albums straight through, which I prefer to do when possible. I have tons of CD's and loads of music on my computer, but I think I'll probably always have my LP's around.

The cover art was a very important part of the whole package just because it was a square foot of area and needing a huge visual impact.

I agree about the listening straight through. I would feel funny just downloading a song off someone's new effort. And how many "concept CDs" are there compared to vinyl concept albums? Not many.

Even though it's not as clear as high quality digital stuff, it definitely has it's charm.

If you had a quality table, arm, cartridge, and phono preamp you would not think this.

Note even if you don't play alot of records you still need to replace your stylus with regular frequency. The (rubber or rubber-like) suspension for the cantilever will degrade over time whether in use or not.

I have a pretty decent record collection, most of which are 12" LPs. I have a few favorite haunts around where I pick up good stuff. In fact, I got all my Johnny Cash records, 8 of them (yeah, I know I have a few left to pick up) at Goodwill for a buck apiece, with the exception of one which I picked up at a different thrift store for fifty cents, even an old Sun pressing. I love vinyl. It's still relatively cheap around here, too. Nothing like a cheap thrill, I say. Besides, I like the sound of music coming from vinyl. I'm still looking for an old gigantic console-style stereo with the spindle turntable. A friend of mine had one, and we used to just put five or six records on at a time and let them go.

My band's second album will be finished soon, and it features a sampling of the "lead out groove" from an original pressing of Genesis Live from 1973. Recognize!

I have a whole double-deep shelf full of vinyl. I have an old Garrard turntable in the attic that needs a needle/stylus, whatever. I haven't played my records in a couple of years. We had a really cool birthday party here at the house and my fellow band mate Jayme brought his turntable over. The music featured at the party was played using every type of format; vinyl, CD, MP3/IPod, and audio files straight from the computer. It was fun pulling out vinyl and spinning tunes. I hadn't done that in a LONG time.

There is something really special about album covers, with their inner sleeves, occasional posters and double album double covers that even the "books" inside some CD covers don't come close to equalling.

On Mike Campbells (from the Tom Petty band) surf cd "The Blue Stingrays" they did a sample of a scratchy lead in groove...The surf/punk band The Fifty Foot Combo from Finland did that as well...cool idea...

So after the much appreciated post lets kinda swerve this thread by saying whats your most treasured piece of vinyl mine is the The guess Who with These eyes/Lightfoot 45.And for the L.P its gotta be My Jimi hendrix box set in L.Ps + every Jam single in picture sleeves.
