Sorry, Brian. I did misunderstand. The following should clarify:

To answer Paul's question, too, I don't use vinegar (I think this is something left over from the hide glue days?), but rather a flexible heating strip from Watlow Heaters (St. Louis, MO) with a rheostat to control heat. I cover half the back at once, heat it for an hour or so, then carefully pry with a sharp chisel. A bit of working around it with hardwood wedges, and one half is done. Repeat for other half. For some reason the tailblock wouldn't respond and I ended up chipping it, but the chip was glued back into palce and it's as good as new.

Anyway, fretboard next+ sparkly inlays...

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the follow up and the information. I was wondering how you separated the joints. I just used the hot vinegar method to loosen the glue joints on a pair of antique Mission style chairs that I'm repairing. I'm worked like a charm, but I was using the technique based on information I read in a furniture repair book, and the chairs that I'm repairing are oak, rather than maple, and a chair is not a fine instrument in any case!

I used to collect Mission-style furniture, Paul. I still own a one-of-a-kind unbrella stand grandfather clock made by Judson Studios in LA for a Greene & Greene house in Pasadena. It used to be in my California bungalow in Highland Park decades ago, but has since migrated to my apartment in Brasil.

Me too. You had a busy beginning of the week documenting and sharing your progress. As always, great work and thanks for feeding our need to watch it all happen.
