I loved the way the aged white on your "old girl" turned out, Bob. It was so cool to do a stock color for a change, too!

(BTW, for anyone who thinks that stock colors are less trouble than bursts, note that solid, non-metallic or pearlescent colors are extremely taxing due to a need for flawlessness and consistency. White and very light shades are by far the toughest...give me a four-color burst anytime...)

Jeff T, Ya know I had to ask Paul what he's doing simply because we've traded many e-mails back and forth that I don't know. And of course I keep adding things! I know it's at least gonna be Ruby with check binding, Duh!

Ironically my first color choice for my '73 4001 was indeed Ruby but later changed my mind.
Maybe I should have stuck with my first choice.
Let me make it known that Paul W. did not do this work on my bass.
Hopefully it will be in Paul's hands in the future for a proper refinish.

In your experience, do most Rickenbackers that were finished in solid colors at the factory have as nice a wood grain pattern as the one you're working on in this thread? My first reaction to the first photos in the thread was that it could have been a nice Mapleglo, too.

Just wondering... (I learn so much from this Forum). I have two Jetglo 4003's, and I've always wondered about the wood grain that might lie underneath...

Dean, there are two possibilities here, concerning a factory JG finish. First (majority of cases), the wood underneath could have a simple defect or unexciting straight grain. Second, the instrument could have been finished in JG to simple complete or meet an order.

But, I've never seen a factory JG guitar which, after stripping, revealed a beautifully-flamed surface.

Now, JG refinishes...they're a whole different story.

Thanks, that's kind of what I suspected, but it's useful to hear your experiences.

Both of my Jetglo's are factory finishes.

I'm gaining a new appreciation, though, of my Mapleglo 4003 which I've had since buying it new in '00, and which has a nice yellowing going on that has warmed me to it's look. It's been my workhorse bass for recording and probably the majority of my gigging for 8 years now (it's such a great player), but now I'm loving the look even more.

Thanks for answering my question - the knowledge I gain from this Forum makes me treasure my Rickenbackers all the more.
