I heard back from the seller - The Ric pups and pick guard are gone - He does have the original tuners.

I agree with whojamfan- It will take a lot to get this one back into shape - and who knows what the results will be. I'm staying away...

Why didnt the guy buy a fender if he wanted a fender? ... its like buying a Jazz and ripping out the pick ups and replacing them with Rick Pups, now THAT i'd like to see

Well that's an embarrassing revelation, Jeff. How did you get the Rick pup to cover all 4 strings on the bridge pickup?

Well...basically the stock pu's on my J bass stunk, so I replaced them with Seymour Duncan stacked humbuckers. I won't claim they sound like the HB-1's in my Laredo, but they are pretty close in output so I don't have to tweak the amp much going between the 2 basses.

The only thing that would dissuade me from putting Ric pu's in a J is the possibility of having to do some routing on the J...unless I'm wrong there?

At that price, it would be a nice testbed.

I had done that with two different '72 Telecaster Basses with a hi-gain. I just narrowed the string spacing at the bridge using a BA II bridge. Later, I did the same with a '71 or '72 Jazz Bass that a friend of mine in Philly still has, in fact. This time round I put it in the neck position. That bass has a very nice growl. I have a recording of that bass on a song I wrote with a friend in '74, but finally got around to recording in '83.

BTW, it is one of my all time favorite sounding basses!

but my other favorite bass is the rhondo SX

I have quarter pounders in it, and it sounds good

I bought it used for 99 bucks...bought it in 3 minutes.....done!

I have taken more time to buy picks, really

Al, no need to duck and run, nor apologize. I have this one: After a fret dress and full setup, it is my second favorite bass to play. I put on the Badass II I took off the '75 4001 I got, and new pots as one was noisy, and Fender flats. Fun to play and better feel and bass than a Squire or MIM. I just wouldn't want to take a router to this one.

John, is that an SX J-bass?

Sorry about the delay - long weekend. Yes, it is a $120 SX '62 Vintage style J-Bass. Best money I've spent on non-Rick music stuff.

I have to confess too: Since 3 months I'm happily "engaged" in playing a Squier Precision Special (already modded with active P/J- EMGs).
It is a decent light work horse and I'm not afraid it might get some rash or scratches... It can sound very vintage, but with the active PU set it also pops and slaps "like a Sadowsky".
But I also promise, I will use Rick again on our birthday-summer-party in August, when my 4001 returns from Paul W. Nothing compares to that Rick lady!!!

I once fitted a High gain to a yamaha RBX 250 bass. It sounded good!
