Then i'm perhaps in "what's Nickelback" league. Neither love, nor hate, just don't care.

Wow,

My daughter is always asking me to listen to these bands, she is ALWAYS praising Nickelback & Switchfoot. She's got all the cd's and gone to the concerts.....I haven't heard ONE SINGE NOTE from either band.

I'll give them a listen now, BEFORE I show my dauther this thread!

How old is she, Tony? I ask because some of my younger guitar students (13-14) ask me to teach them Nickelback stuff a lot.

Personally, Nickelback doesn't do anything for me either, but I'm not a young teen. Generational thing. Even a few years of separation in age can make a difference. My brother is six years older than I am. He was into Pat Boone (even bought the white buckskin shoes) and I grew up with the Beatles. Major difference in musical idols.

In French, "singe" means "monkey"... hmmm... methinks it's a good definition of what we can hear from them. (No offence meant, Tony, just kinda trying to be funny.)

So this has been an interesting thread in that it highlights the difference between rock as an art and rock as a business.

The purists want rock to remain an art.

The record company executives are businessmen and their accountants are simply bottom line driven.

I am reminded of a conversation that I had with the president of the record company I was signed to. He said (or words to this effect) Brian if you want to be succesful in this business to have to find a way to play your music and still give people what they want. The DJ's and the record buying public will determine your success. That was a conversation held in 1966. Payola has supposedly gone the way of the dodo bird but has anything really changed?

Your thoughts?

Hey John,

She is now 17, but she has been listening to them since middle school, so your age group is right on target...from about the age of 13. But she REALLY likes them. Jennette also met Switchfoot, at a concert recently.

LOL, too funny Sheena, that is what I get for typing without my glasses on again! LoL!

I never thought I would be defending a band like Nickelback, especially on a Rick site, but the fact remains, if Chad Kroegar played a 620 or something, a lot of you guys would be talking about how great they are. I believe many of what you guys say about them were said about the Beatles, but in no way compare the two.

Like I said earlier, not my cup of tea,but I wouldn't say that they have no talent or were just given their fame. FM radio sucks, and in it's lame rotation, we are force fed the same 5 songs all day long, which inevitably makes us hate those 5 bands. Can you imagine how sick of the Beatles non fans must of been having to hear them all of the time.

I'm not saying run out and buy their stuff and become their biggest fan or anything, but I am quite surprised how much people here despise them for reasons other than what it is they actually do, as opposed to what they actually do. Interesting, at the very least, and leads me to start a new thread here.

That's not true at all though. I don't like anyone just because they play Ricks.

Agreed. Just an example. Here's a band with a Ric.

Do i like them? Mwahaha. No way. Not to mention they may get a proud title of "double plagiarists".

Wes, read my "Kill your radio" thread, I'd really like to know what you think on that.

Wow, that's horrible. Not to mention there's no guitar at all for most of the song anyways. Is that what pop music sounds like in Russia?

Well, pop music in Russia sounds different — some songs are much better, others are even worse, but that's a typical example of what they play on the radio for "mass audiences" (what they call "двигай попой", or "move your ar$e", i. e. unlistenable **** for dancing when "doctors couldn't find a trace of blood in your booze"). That's about all i can say cause i'm not into modern pop at all.

Interesting video, I've heard much worse, and actually like the little bit at the end where they sounded like they were kickin' in to another tune. I went in with the frame of mind of "how gawd awful is this going to be?" and was actually dissapointed that it wasn't worse, and watched it all the way through because I was looking at the Rick. Yes, the Rick, otherwise, I would have dismissed it in the first 30 seconds, and posted what a **** song it was straight away. It is what it is, a slightly techno pop song, that ended up having a cool boy girl standoff 3/4 in to the song, which led to much more of a guitar oriented ending(or was that the beginning of a new song.) Not gonna run out and buy it, but have heard worse from some of our most beloved and revered Rickenbacker heroes.

Really though, kind of Apples and Oranges in illustrating an objection to my earlier statement. I think a lot of Rick players get a little more tolerance than any others on this site, but after all, it is a Rick site. I wasn't trying to single any one person out in my statement, only trying to make a point. A point, which I might add, that was somewhat proven by the fact that I sat through that whole video just because their was a Rick guitar in it, which you finally got to hear at the end. Why did you watch it all the way through, it wasn't bad enough to be campy or funny, it wasn't good enough to hold your interest, it must have been that guitar, and the hopes of hearing it.

I did the same thing the other night when Sheryl Crow was on Leno. Not a big fan, but watched the whole thing because her bassplayer had a blue 4003 and she was playing a Gibson 12 string. In the end, it changed my mind about her as I liked the song, and gave it a good listen because I was so jazzed of the instruments being used. I may even go get her new album.

I'm trying to make something positive out of an overtly negative thread, but seem to be fighting a losing battle. I don't give 2 piles of poo for Nickelback, just trying to figure out what the criteria is for having a band be successful and respected, even if you don't like their brand of music. In the process was trying to state that if they used the right instruments, people here would be more apt to give them a shot instead of immediately shoot them down.
