Yes I used the line 6 bass pod on that recording and played with a pick. The 4003s5 takes quite well to distortion ...

I got inspired by this thread and took out my 4003s5 to play with my band today. It was a nice drive up into the mountains with my mustang convertable to play outside on a nice summer day in the mountains of Colorado. So I took my 5 string jazz with the active electronics and my 4003s5 passive bass. The Ric does better getting a growlly distroted retro sound and the jazz gets a better modern sound for popping the strings.

A musicman gets a better clean sound than a Ric does. But the Ric has a nice passive single coil growl to it. 2 different sounds.

The 4003s5 is a little "meaner" sounding than a 4003. The bridge pickup is bigger, so it must be more powerful.
My bass works for lots of styles. I have small hands so finger playing works fine for me. I also used to play with a very thin metal pick
for metal/prog stuff. That was the best sound I ever got from a bass.

I have two StingRay5 basses, I also think they sound great, yet I prefer the sound of my 4003S/5.

Correct ... the 4003 has 2 high gain pickups wound to 11k ohms. The 4003s5 bridge pickup is wound to 15k ohm.

Get an 8 string! I remember seeing one about 10 years ago in Jetglo for sale in little shop in Seattle for around $1600. :(

If all the ifs and buts were candy and nuts....
