Listening again I think the V63 has it rather than the '78. It cuts through better and in the context of a band that really matters.

Philip, did you use the same type of strings on all the basses, if so what did you use, great tone on all of them!

On the two Rics I used the same set of Rotosound strings. (I think the set is about 2/3 weeks old).
On the Jazz I put a new set of Rotosounds.

Rotosound RS 66LC

Cheers!

[quote="edski"]Of the Ricks, I think the v63 sounded the best - I liked the completely open sound.

I agree!

I was quite astounded that the open 78 and the open Geddy sounded so similar ! It has been said before that a Jazz can sound very similar at times to the 4001....look at Geddy himself, I have trouble deciding if he has used the Ric or the Jazz on his earlier stuff !

I think again it comes back to the 2 different basses sounding similar because "you" are playing them both. We are all quite unique in our playing styles and techniques.

Great study though, thankyou.

Personally I think a Precision sounds more like a Rick than a Jazz.

Things like this are always subjective and a matter of opinion. I personally think Geddy gets a a very Ric like sound from his Jazz. I also would have bet good money that John Wetton was using a Ric (I didnt know he was known for using a 61 Precision at the time) on Wildest Dreams with Asia.

All the recording sound very good. I like the sound of the '78 most of all.
