Hi Andy. It appears that Brian Epstein died of the overdose on August 27, 1967, while they were in Bangor with the Maharishi. According to "The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions" (Mark Lewisohn), "Hey Bulldog" was recorded on Sunday, February 11, 1968 from 4 pm to 2 am in 10 takes with George Martin to pick the best one. The takes were recorded right to four-track without reduction mixes. An interesting comment was that the Beatles usually made weird sounds and goofed around as a song would fade out, but this time they decided to leave that in.
On Take 10, the overdubs were added: fuzz bass (4001S), off-beat drums, middle 8 guitar solo, double tracked Lennon vocal, and Paul's backing vocal. You can see John and Paul do those overdubs in the Youtube video at times.

Yeah, I agree, but maybe they decided not go with it. It's in the book, so it must be correct, right?

Of course it was the '60's, so maybe Fuzz Bass actually was a bass with Fuzz all over it. :?:
