I don't know for sure, but I think the upswing in production of Rick basses in the mid '70s can be attributed to Chris Squire and Roger Glover whose bands, Yes and Deep Purple, were very popular on FM radio in the US (and Europe, I imagine). And with Paul McCartney already playing his Rick bass pretty steadily in Wings, this exposure must have made orders for Rick basses soar.

So I'm kinda lost here. Who currently possesses the 21-fret White with filled-in position markers? Anyone here? Inquiring minds want to know!

It's in Europe Paul. As far as I'm aware, the owner is unknown.

Squire, and to a much latter degree Glover, are the reason for the upswing in production numbers from late 71 on. There are more 68's than other years it would appear, due to their appearance for sale that seems somewhat frequent, certainly compared to 69/70, and possibly 71's, but we are still talking very small numbers compared to 72 on...

I think this has come up from time to time.
It would be nice to get a ballpark figure.
72 and early 73 seem to be the most prominent "features" 4001's.
69's are pretty rare, but they don't compare to 70 and 71.

I kind of like that white CB, different.

Did anyone ever a definitive reason WHY 70 & 71's seem to be so rare?

Was production LOW, or did they just fade through attrition?

I've seen more 70's and 71's than 69's, but there's not much in it. We are talking very low volume here across the board...

The next Rickenbacker one off should be something a bit like this!
