It's nice that buyers can't receive negatives now, for just that reason.

I'll try one of my J basses in it tonight. To make things even more complicated, the case that the '73 came in looks like an old Fender case, but is too short to fit any of my J basses (and doesn't fit the 4001 that well either). I can't figure out what's supposed to go in it, and it's definitely not newer.

I'm playing musical cases ... I just got a 4003 with no case, so was going to use the case my Shadow is living in (a 4003-style case) for that, and put the Shadow in a spare 4001 case, but it doesn't fit there, the 4001 doesn't fit into this case, and my Fender style basses don't fit into what I thought was a Fender case ... it's like a bad logic puzzle.

It gets more interesting.

Does anyone have a 4005 case that they could measure for me?

The handle hardware is the same orientation as my 4001 Rickenbacker case. My Fender case handles are quite different. So I don't think it was meant for a Fender.

I saw you on the side of the road getting that ticket on my one foray to Lorain buying a scanner from Staples. Years ago.

I'm back but the 4005 is in the back of the closet so it will have to wait till tomorrow. Somebody give me a call after 11 am and I will did out the bass.

All right -- so here are some pics of the mystery case, with a '73 4001 inside for visual comparison purposes. As you can see, there's a bit of room all around, especially around the horns.

The interior measurements are 46.5 inches by 15 inches. The exterior is 47.5 by 16 by 4 -- a bit larger than my other early 70s case (both wider and thicker, though not taller as far as I can tell).
There's not a ton of room around the headstock, but here's what I meant about the tuners hanging over. The case seems to close just fine, and there's enough depth that it's not getting squished or anything.

The latches and handle look the same as the other early 70s cases I've seen.
It looks like the lining on the top of the case doesn't go all the way to the edge -- not sure I've seen this on other early 70s cases:

4005 case: 49½" x 16⅔' x 4¼"

Looking at the photo showing the tuning keys overlapping the compartment makes me think that perhaps the Schallers tuners do not stick out as far?

I put a more recent bass ('01 I think) in there, and it looked about the same. Were your measurements exterior measurements? I always envisioned the the 4005 as being much larger than a 4001, but not much taller.

Yes, those are exterior dimensions.

Hm. Well, it's pretty close except for the length. Weren't some 4005s longer than others? Could this have gone with a shorter 4005?

I am not familiar with different "size" 4005s. but you never know. Have you considered the possibility of this case being for a 3000 series?
