Four strings tuned an octave lower than guitar is bass. Period. Someone playing said instrument is a bass player. Period. The tone and style can be disliked and depends on preference. Just because he plays it unconventionally does not make him any less of a player of the bass guitar.

There's no reason for an instrument or player to have to conform to a standard of what it/he or she "should" sound like. Life would be bland if that were the case.

Right - think of Billy Sheehan - not your typical bass player but I don't think anyone could honestly say he's not a bass player. Just not a root player.

Its all styles and personal likes and dislikes. Personally Lemmy's playing and Motorhead do nothing for me, but so what?

Instead of Lemmy vs. Geddy, how about Lemmy jamming with Geddy? Each playing the other one's Rickenbacker! Who should be the drummer? Since it's a fantasy lineup, let's say the drummer has to be deceased - I vote for Tony Williams!

In the mid '80s Shari and I went to Disneyland for a Hughes Aircraft Day. There is a pavillion near Main Street that had a big band setting up so we went to check it out. Lo and behold, it was the Buddy Rich Band!!! We got to see a great show that evening, at no more cost than the inexpensive entry fee (for Hughes folks ).

My dad had a great story about Buddy Rich. My Dad was a drummer in the big band era and his band played on a bill with Buddy's band. He said that Buddy was very particular about his drums and didn't want anyone touching them. They had a few drinks at the bar and got on very well, and my Dad summoned up the courage to ask if he could sit down and play his kit.

Buddy said, "Sure, have at it", and he did. It was one of the thrills of his life.

He also has a great black and white picture (which I dont have a copy of, unfortunately) of he and Buddy at the bar, toasting.
Ahh...the good old days.

Does your dad have the original negative? If not I can make you a 4x5 copy neg of the print and make you real b&w prints for you.

Gene Krupa was the greatest, buddy stole alot of his chops from Gene, I would love to see Gene Krupa jam with any of todays great musicians, he would fit right in, Im not a fan of Geddy or Lemmy's, so I dont have anything to say on that issue.
