I've been a regular lurker and occasional poster of the forum for a year or two, have owned a half dozen Rick guitars and bass over the past 30 years and have purchased and sold guitars (directly and indirectly) from and to board members...even in the pre-internet era, as it turns out.

I currently own two basic, special-to-me-but-not-especially-special Ricks: a '98 360/6 MG and a '98 620/12 FG (the closeness in age was entirely a coincidence).

So here's my MARF question...is a guitar at the door a requirement for admission? Compared to some of the marvels I've read described on these pages on last year's MARF, mine are very plain-yet-lovable guitars, so don't know what they'd add to the confabulation. Worth bringing just so there are enough guitars to be played if the Guiness World Record official is there for the "most people simultaneously playing Rickenbackers" judging? On one hand, attending to just see these wonders of the guitar world in person would be satisfying enough (and no doubt induce a whole new round of RAS), but I fear showing up without a Rick would make me suspect...an outsider, an interloper, a pariah. (Though that's a bit strong...you all seem like nice people.)

I also want to bring my daughter along...she's learning to play, has a great sense of pop music history and loves the Beatles, Who, Petty, and all things Rickenbacker in her own right. (She freaks out when we have the occassional lone Rick sighting at Sam Ash, so I know she'll ooh and aah being in the presence of a group of people who are truly devoted to these instruments. (And will likely start her down her own slippery slope that is RAS.)

Anyway, just wanted to throw it out there as a question... to bring or not to bring... what would you prefer?

Hi Max...

I'm somewhat new at these gatherings also - first was in June for RIO!!!!! and attended SoCal 08 in August. Brought my toys to RIO!!!! but not to SoCal, since I was stranded in Cali on a work assignment at the time and I was Rickless. The SoCal crowd did spy me with suspicion, but that's because I'm a New Yawker! As the old saying goes - "the people make the party" - and the people know how to party  Whenever I hear about a confluence now I will do whatever it takes to attend.

OK, with that out of the way I can only say that you MUST come, MUST bring your daughter and decide for yourself if you want to bring your toys...I say BRING EM! There is no such thing as an "ordinary" Rickenbacker.

Hi Max. Bring your daughter, we need to induce MRAS (Maximum Rickenbacker Acquisition Syndrome) into her for sure! Your guitars are certainly most welcome. :D The only thing we may ask is that your daughter ask before handling any of the instruments, yours excepted, of course  , as many of them are quite valuable. This is not to say she will not be allowed to play them, just a precaution. :D BTW, how old is your daughter?

A MESSAGE FOR ALL OF THOSE WHO PLAN TO STAY AT THE HAMPTON INN IN VOORHEES.......

It is important that you make your reservations by 15 OCTOBER 2008, because what rooms that remain left over that are currently blocked for the Fest will revert back into hotel inventory. I just want to make sure that all who intend to stay there will get there room booked.. Thank you.

Thanks much to all for your welcoming words. We're looking forward to attending and will bring the 360/6 and 620/12 to keep the people:guitar ratio on an even keel (though based on some of your collections, I'm guessing it'll be favoring the guitar side).

My daughter's 15 and we'll both be on our best behaviour. :) We'll likely stare in shocked and stunned awe at the assortment of instruments in attendance.

("Yeah, shocked...and stunned." "Very stunned.")

I'm afraid she's already been bitten by the Rickenbacker bug...a few months ago, she was looking through a music magazine and saw someone with a 360-F...never having seen one, she used her cell phone to snap a picture and email it to me for identification. And just this morning, she was talking about watching the Beatles' Ed Sullivan appearances on DVD the other day and asked why John's first 325 had different pickguard/trc than the later one with white pg/trc. Not a bad observation from a black & white broadcast! She'd also not-so-broadly hinting that she'd love to have a fireglo bass "like Paul's." (me and her both!) Big thrill for both of us last year when we got to visit the VIP "Lennon Room" at the Hard Rock in Orlando and sit on John's wicker couch.

Looking forward to meeting you and your daughter (name?). Sounds like she knows more than you made out about Ricks. Nice! :D
