I've got about 15 of those stands, Chris, and I've never had any issues with them..... apart from the fact that if you stand on them they're toast!!

I've left Ricks on them for days at a time.... no problems. However, weeks and months might be a different story..... I only have 3 or 4 guitars out of their cases at a time and I do rotate them pretty regularly.

I've begun using the Hercules stands more these days, especially the triple hanger - very convenient indeed!

I used to have a couple of those Hamilton KB38 stands. I never had a problem with them. Unfortunately I have no idea what happened to them after I moved from NY.

Ummm...... yes, Kris. I worked out a couple of weeks ago that if you want to 'get on your soapbox' then don't use a Fender mini-stand!

I have these stands. The Triple AGS (GS432B) for live performance (holds my 4003FL BB, my Gibby T-Bird, and my acoustic Ibinbuz). I have the GSP38WB on the walls in my studio area (8 of them with the wood base) for all of my guitars/basses. The stage stands are stable, positive locking around the neck, and the heads on the mall mounts swivel to the correct angle to match the various headstocks. Not the cheapset on the block, buth then neither are my basses!

I have 6 or 7 of the Ultimate stands which I like as a guitar stand but... I once left a Gibson Flying V and a Gibson Les Paul Custom sitting on their stands for several months while I was playing my Rickenbackers, etc. The tubing damaged the finish on both Gibsons. I immediately checked my Fenders and found nothing(different finish). Luckily my Rickenbacker 360-12 had not been on the stand for a long enough period for this damage to occur. Bottom line, cover the rubber tubing with cloth. I sometimes fold the guitar straps under my guitars and sit them on the stand so that the guitar body doesn't come into contact with the rubber tubing. -BC

I realize that there could be an interpretation problem here but no one has suggested there's anything contained in cotton to be damaging. As was stated quite clearly, it's the wicking action of cotton picking up contaminants from chemical laden materials and transferring them to the finish that is the problem. The contaminated cotton then burns an imprint into the finish. This is certainly not the fault of the instrument maker.

For goodness sake, if you're worried, just replace the stand's rubber with silicone foam tape or sheet material as sold at McMaster-Carr and other supply house. Not quite as stable but still pretty good (and probably what's used on better stands) is neoprene foam, as used on wet suits.
