Does your amp have an effects loops? If so you can build a simple foot pedal that has a volume pot and a switch to bypass it. This would all be done post preamp and probably not effect your tone.

Some Boogie amps have a built in solo feature which is great for this. Too bad other manufacturers haven't caught on.

I use the Barber Tone Pump, it has 2 levels of distortion, so i use the first as a boot with a slight edge, then the 2nd for crazy stuff. Though lately I've been using the janglebox as a boost... I like to chord without it.

Just for the record, I bought an MXR boost pedal yesterday from Custom Guitar Gear in Philly. It's totally transparent and won't dirty my sound at all, just give me more oomph on solos, and that's all I need it for.
