I'd like to go on record once again as being against bursts that use solid colors. They are cool and retro on Masonite Danelectros, but not on many other instruments.
99.9999% of Rick bursts have been done with translucent colors, and the range is wide enough that there are thousands of subtle and not-so-subtle options. For example, Russ Rubman's Aquabass was done with pale aqua, deep aqua, and cobalt blue over aqua, for a very nice effect. I've done bursts with up to five colors, like the Mink basses or the deep brown/wine fade on my '60 Capri.

My finish evolved friend, you have made your point loud and clear.
Layers of different colours certainly make a bold statement.
Here is an example that I like that may be consistent with your comments. An autumnburst.

oh, don't get me started... you know I love coming up with new rick colors. I suppose safetyglo is out?

How about something like this?

Or if you want to keep it "boring" (DMC, BG) you could always add one of these to cheer it up.

Is that a chick magnet or what?
OK, I'll go away now.

Again, a vote for one of these Autumburst/Winebursts. The maple on that guitar is too nice to be painted over!

Dan: You make a compelling argument to have the grain showing.

Kira: You almost had me considering csiglo or miamiglo for a moment.

Anything I can do to help... (contradict the conventional wisdom, that is.)
Say, you could slip an ammo clip in between the pickguards, too.

Ok, Kira. How about this interesting finish?

Seriously, I like. Great depth from the burst on opaque, but the colors seem a little too low saturation and too cool. Could be my monitor. Maybe a little pink champagne under a nice tarnished silver outer burst, wow! That's assuming you can live without the wood grain.
Yeah, the other is sweet. Traditional, yet graphic. Needs some deep amber checkerboard binding.

Kira: Wood grain certainly is part of the look I hope to achieve. That deep blue is striking though.
Paul: For you it sounds likeTabbyglo wins by a whisker.

For that guitar, and knowing you, I think finally I would go with translucent colors.
But here's a champagney metallic number that I'd imagine for the Musicman example.
But after seeing the aquaburst, wineburst, I don't have my heart in opaques, really.
