And from some of the stuff I've seen that people call art, doing what Bob did would make 'em better than a lot of 'em out there...

Everytime I tuned through Ross, I was reminded of the late '60s, when I was quite an impecunious young design student. I'd recently switched majors from fine art--painting, to Industrial Design, motivated by a desire to make a decent living. But for the nonce, I was struggling like many youngsters, trying to finish my degree.

I saw a job offer postcard on a campus bulletin board for fine art painters. I thought, "somebody wants to commission paintings? How weird!", and dialed the number. I went for an interview to a large warehouse-type building in the Chicago suburb of DesPlaines, near where I lived at the time. After I filled out an application, I was called into a manager's office. He thought I'd do fine in the position. He wanted to know, did I mind being paid at piecework rates? I had an immediate impression of making $20 for painting an apple and a dead duck on a tabletop. I asked him what he was thinking of. He replied that he would just show me, and led me through a door into the back of the warehouse...

...where, set up on prop easels on loooong tables, were rows and rows of identical mountain lake landscapes, similar to the one shown with Ross above. Walking from table to table were a group of artists, each with a different color on a tray, along with a brush, or a sponge, or a blending mop. Artists #1, 2, and 3 were doing the graduated blended color backgrounds in acrylics...one the sky, the next the background shapes and the middle-ground water; the last was doing the foreground hummocks.

The next groups would each fill in one or two details with specially-shaped sponges: pine trees, a boat on the lake, a large pine group in the foregound was added last. The paintings, which had cobalt salts dryers added to the oils, would sit overnight to harden; an early shift would wrap each in cardboard and put out fresh canvases for the artists, who would arrive at 8:30 and begin again with a different painting, colors, and sponges and brushes.

We're talking 200 paintings a day here, which shipped by truck all around the country to those "discount art gallery" shows that are held in airport hotel conference rooms. An original oil, "sofa-sized" (about 24" X 48"), would typically sell for $99...others were sold to real estate firms to spruce up model homes, furniture stores for room displays and other stores to merely sell at markup.

Being the snob that I am, I decided to do something else--door to door population surveys--for money while I finished my college, rather than prostitute my "talent" making factory art.

Now that sort of thing is done in China for even less money, and everytime I see Ross, I squint and try to recall if he's the same manager who I almost went to work for back in late 1969.
