Thank you all for the warm welcome. I appreciate all the advice regarding the 4005, I have never played one but I love semi or hollow body basses, and I am in love with the way it looks.
One of my other searches is to find my lost love.
She was a 1973 4001, I had to give her up years ago in my struggling musician days. She had the checkered binding, mapleglow finish and played beautifully.
You probably all know this, but I remember examing the toaster neck pickup and it had 6 pole pieces underneath, it was obviously a guitar pickup. I bought this bass brand new so no one could have changed it out.
Jeffery mentioned the MARF that is happening next week, I tried to find info on that and must be looking in the wrong place. I live near San Francisco and would be interested in going, what is it's location?
I love your site and I notice you have areas devoted to two of my favorite bassists, McCartney and Squire.

David, there really is no difference between a guitar and bass toaster pickup, so it having 6 poles was right. There is only a slightly difference between a guitar toaster pickup and a toaster pickup installed on a 4001 or 4003 and that would be the mounting holes.

Welcome. The MARF is happening next weekend (Saturday only) near Philadelphia, at the Pick of the Ricks store site in nearby New Jersey. It'll be a great time, and if you can make it, you will enjoy the day. For more info, go to the Forum Index, and at the top should be "Annoucements" and look for "MARF III INFO THREAD--15 NOV 2008."

The Toaster pickup is kind of a universal unit, and is the same used for guitars. The difference is the way it is mounted. On guitars and the 4005 bass, it is mounted to the body; on the 4001/4003 bass, it is mounted to the pickguard.

We almost have something in common. You played with Boston, and I ALMOST played with Boston. Back in 1975 when Tom had left Mother's Milk, a buddy of mine and I were forming a band in the Burlington/Bedford area, and we looked around for a guitarist. My buddy, Tony, knew Tom, and we were going to try him out, but had another guitarist try out first. That guy was a perfect fit, and we never called Tom in. A year or so later, the debut Boston album came out, and we all, figuratively, jumped off the Mystic River Bridge! If we had called Tom in first, and if we all liked each other, we could have been Boston. Forks in the road, sliding doors, and all that. I remember seeing Jan (?) the original bassist playing in another band just prior to that, too. Those were the days back in the Boston area; Jay Giles, Aerosmith, The Cars -- all great Boston bands, too.

There has definitely been some concerns about this bass. I have emailed the seller and have not received a reply to my questions. I would be carefl with this.

When I was a child my mother used to tell me it wasn't safe to go into the woods at night, the photo above confirms what she said!

I can see I'm in the right place, you guys are a wealth of knowledge. Sorry to say, I can't make it back east for next weekend, I would love to see some of these instruments you guys are bringing. It would be nice if you could add some pretty girls though, you would be stroking more than Rickenbackers, ha!

Pretty funny with Mothers Milk. Fran Sheehan was the original bassist you were referring to. I met him and jammed with him last year at a tribute concert we had for Brad our singer, in Boston. Fran is a real sweet guy, we ended up playing "Don't Look Back" together at the sound check. You may not know but Brad passed away last year. Brad has been accused of being the nicest guy in rock and roll, and he think he was. A great person and friend.

David, there was a thread in the others section when Brad passed away. I think that was last December, very sad news.

Speaking of pretty girls, did you also meet Kimberley Dahme, who is another bassist for Boston?

David, yes, Fran (not Jan) Sheehan. I think you tried PMing me through the feature on this Forum, but all that came through was my message to you (above). Yes, I knew about Brad. Great pipes, so sad he's gone.

Yes I did meet Kimberley, definitely better looking than me. She was actually Tom Scholz girlfriend for some time. I replaced original bassist Fran Sheehan and played with Boston for 11 years from early 87 to 98 when I left. I think Kim came in a couple of years later.

David, I'd like to add my welcome also. Stick around and you will learn more than you ever wanted to know about Rickenbackers - this is the place. 4005 basses come up ever so often, so just keep your eyes open, and these guys can tell you where and how to keep looking for one. You will eventually get one that way.

As for your old '73 4001MG - do you know the serial number? If you do, look at the upper right of this webpage for the Rickenbacker Register link. You can search it for the serial number, or also filter for '73 4001 basses. Who knows, maybe someone here owns it!

Welcome aboard the RRF train. Hope you have the time to check in on a regular basis. I'm sure you could be very important fountain of knowledge on the professional side of things.

And major kudos for wanting to be a Dad to your two sons. They grow up so fast and then they they are gone. That time is precious and worth whatever it takes to be there. My being father to my 3 (2 daughters, 1 son) and partaking in their lives has been the biggest thrill in my life. Now it's just my wife and I and we're loving that, but we always love it when one or more come home to visit.
