Yes, I sold it! Great bass, but I am used to no markers on the fingerboard that the position dots actually made it more difficult for me to play!!!
A friend of mine in Delaware has it now, and he will be at MARF this weekend so maybe the bass will be there.

I heard no noise increase with the cover removed, but then, I also put the toaster in there at the same time.

Those photos on the Hipshot site were made by me, so it is the same bass.

:( So sorry you felt you had to sell it. Were the position markers in the wrong position? Oh, duh, you're referring to the ones on the fingerboard, not the binding... in which case yes they were. Well, for me, I actually don't even see them. They are "ambered" so they blend in to the fingerboard and while I'm playing I don't even know they are there, so to speak. I do find the dots on the binding a good set of reference points, however.

The side dots were also in the position for a fretted bass so they were not any help. The side dots on my Zon are where the frets would be which is the correct way to do a fretless instrument.

I wonder how much it would have been to have new binding installed? I think the really cool 4001FLs are the ones that have large dots at 3,5,7,9,12,15,17,19, and then miniscule dots as well. If I ever had to refinish my bass I may have somebody do that for me. That said I really don't have any trouble staying on track as things are right now so it might just be confusing.
