No, for your information I AM NOT INSANE!!!! All I was asking was , since Macca did it, if any one else had entertained the notion. I never expected to get flamed or insulted for asking. Pardon me, it won't happen again.

Easy there, Randy. Jim was just joking with you, as most people here know he is the worlds biggest fan of the fireglo finish. He's also known as Mr Fireglo. Jim is a really nice guy. I'm 100% certain that no flame or insult was intended and that he was just kidding about his own passion for fireglo.

Read my post again, Randy. Jim is a great guy and an avid FireGlo enthusiast. I'm positive it was in jest and an allusion to his color preference "mania."

I'm OK. The way it was worded kind of hit me wrong. Sometimes it's hard to tell by the written word whether someone is kidding or not. I was asking this question curiously more than anything. I doubt very seriously that I would ever strip my C64. The only case I could in reality think of is if the finish became damaged for some unforseen reason.

Like I told Joey, there are some very good people here on this forum.

Sorry for my little temper tantrum folks. That normally isn't like me. I was just having a bad day and jumped off the edge a little too quick perhaps. I realize now that no harm or insult was meant by the post that set me off. I had forgotten that Jim was so passionate about FG. It really is a nice color. Which is why I bought my C64 in FG in the first place. The original intent of my "survey", was to see, if given the right situation, if anyone might change from Fireglo to Mapleglo, or another color. Perhaps that is the way I should have worded the question. It was only asked out of me being curious. I have no serious intention of ever changing my C64's color either.

I had a C64 FG, I traded it for a C64S. Later I realized I prefered the C64 FG and sold the C64S.

I have a C64S. Cool and unique Rick! But a stripped and sanded Fireglo C64 would be more authentic!*

*Well...provided that you rounded the horns just right, lengthened the fretboard, fitted a zero fret, changed the nut to white, and swapped out the tail piece and bridge pickup surround with 70's parts!

What interests me about this thread more than anything is how stripping the finish and replacing it with a "lighter" finish could affect the tone. I can't say I have any experience in this area, but it makes sense to me that how many layers of however much alcohol, lacquer, water-based stain or whatever finish could affect the way the wood resonates. I don't know if in any predictable way, though, since every piece of wood is different.

One thing I postulated to myself once: my 4003FL (aka Dream Bass) has gone with me on several jazz gigs lately and I've found that it gets really aggressive-sounding if I dig in, in a way I haven't experienced on other fretless basses. Think 1-5,5-1-5,5-ish Latin numbers that drive hard, like, perhaps, Caravan. A jazz song that could scare your grandma, as a friend once put it. Anywho the way I played it the other night, my bass started making Geddy noises! Without roundwounds or frets. A lot of it is in your hands of course, but the instrument makes it possible. I was thinking, perhaps, the thick varnish on the fingerboard could cause some of this aggressive tone--I've never heard a fretless do it quite so markedly before, and other fretlesses I played had no fingerboard finish. No? Just me? Okay.

Hmm...Well, there are a lot of other factors going on there too. For instance, the year your 4003FL was made (90's Rick basses can be pretty growly) or the setup. Maybe your pickups are very close to your strings.

Any who, you're probably aware of this already but I thought I'd mention it anyway!

Of course! It's hard to be scientific unless you really nail down all your variables. In fact, guitar science is VERY difficult because of individual player impact.

Randy, Jim hasn't posted in so long that many here wouldn't have known him anyway. As to sanding the FG, it is your bass and yours to do as you please with. Many here would be against it, it being a rare C64FG, but it is your instrument.

My sincere apologies if you mistook my post, it was not meant to insult nor to flame you here on the Forum.

As a few have mentioned I've this thing, well obsession for Fireglo, anything Fireglo .........Hmmmmmmm Fireglo.

As John said in the end we are all the masters of our own instruments and they are ours to do with as we please. Regardless of colour, all Rics are wonderful, some (the Fireglo's) are a little nicer than others.
