Marc,keep your eyes peeled for a 1950's or 1960's Rickenbacker Model 100,or the Electro EH-1 or EH-3 (legs) equivalent...1&1/4"wide,type three horseshoe magnet pickup,bakelite nut and saddle,maple body for long sustain,cheaper than a pre-war Model 59,or post-war Model NS,which would be my second choice for an entry-level lapsteel...hard to go wrong...I keep one in my van (a 1958 model),24/7,just in case the lapsteel/Dobro guy that I play with can't make the gig...of course,I keep a bass,mandolin,six string acoustic and electric in the van,as well...I often have to fill in for missing band members...and,NO,I won't tell you where I park! I don't recommend the last RIC lapsteels,like the model 102/105...they're not properly sheilded,and quite noisy,with their pseudo-higain pickups...
