Ha, it was the out-of-print, 2001-published book, Kira.

Here's the back cover with Shinseido's (RIC's distributor for Japan and Asia) ad:

Paul: Please describe the Chinese fuzzy-spicy hot pot dinner in more detail.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

I'll try my best, Peter and Jeff.

The main ingredient to make it fuzzy is a special kind of spotted pepper that's not spicy but makes your lips and toungue all numb with a constant fuzz that lasts for 1 or 2 hours. Add that to the dry red chilli pepper, and you get the fuzz and the spice.

To enjoy hot pots, you simply throw the prepared raw meats, seefoods and vegetables into the boiling pot, take them out when they're not raw anymore, dip them in your bowl of oil and garlic (or just plain sesame paste) with chopped scalion and coriander, then eat. Best drinks to go with it is ice-cold Coke or Sprite.

Here are some Youku(Chinese Youtube) videos of girls enjoying their FSHP:

Here's a video on the making of the "white and red" (straight and fuzzy-spicy) hot pot. This is pretty much what we had on my birthday:

We liked the video on making the hot pot but definitely had a hard time with the directions on making it! Looks delicious. :D
