This looks to me like some sort of transfer of oils (skin oils or hand lotion) to the clearcoat.

It may not have penetrated far into the varnish. Try getting some original T-Cut and rubbing it in, using a soft cotton cloth. If this doesn't take it out, it may have penetrated too far. Don't rub too much (more than a minute or two); the varnish in these areas is only about .007"-.010" thick.

Thanks for the advice. It's definitely connected to hand/arms position, as we've not seen the discolouration elsewhere, and there's strong correlation of forearm/thumb/pinkie position to blotch location. I'll suggest the T-Cut approach and see how it goes.

The original post stated it was a female's bass and they tend to use hand lotions and that could explain the pattern and color of the discolorations. OP Tony should check and see if she's a user. Sorry, I couldn't resist.
