I think Paul only used the neck pickup on his 4001. It even went a long time with the horseshoe non-functioning before the bass was repaired at the factory.

Anyone know which strings he actually used? More specific than long shiny ones.

I hope that was meant as a joke. I know it cracked ME up!
Which part is cracking you up? Either way I'm a joke... ;)
Naw. It was the part about being more specific than long shiny ones! :D

I am pretty sure Paul played Rickenbacker flats as JH has posted over on the RIC forum about Paul's bass tech and his search for all the old RIC flat sets he could get. Also, Paul used a LOT of compression. I always thought he only used the neck pickup but these pictures of the Revolver sessions disprove that. Also looks like the neck is low and the treble pup up all the way???

John, some here believe that the wiring harness was flipped, hence down = neck pickup.

Ahh, yes, I remember now - a righty harness on a lefty guard. That re-aligns the universe for me... I had always heard it was all neck and cut treble and lots of compression.

I agree with that theory. I do believe there are a few tunes with the horseshoe being used though. Glass Onion comes to mind. I hear that rear pu clanking through the mix.
At least that's what it sounds like to me. Sounds great, IMO!

Hmm..I always thought Glass Onion was Fender Jazz Bass, at least that's what I play when we do that tune, perhaps I'm wrong.

I've got a feeling that all those "clanky" tunes are in fact, the jazz bass.

They are commonly thought of as the Jazz, but the sound has always reminded me more of an uncapped horseshoe.

My thoughts exactly. I easily get closer to that sound with the 4001S with the two pu's combined (either with or without the cap) than I do with the JB. And my JB is on the bright side.

I think the "clanky" tunes are actually a Fender Bass VI.
