Yes, that sounds like a plastic one. If it were metal, I'd imagine it would be a formed sheet metal, which would be smooth on the bottom. One could cast metal and put the ribs on it, but that would cost a lot more than forming sheet metal.

Oddly enough, I have a vague memory of actually seeing one sometime way back. Probably sometime in the 70's back when I used to play lots of gigs, I seem to remember comparing my '74 4001 with someone else and noting the plastic vs. metal cover.
But, that was a while ago, and maybe I just dreamed it...
