Those set neck 4001S basses do not fall short on sound and playability. They rock!
My '81 4001S has a very thin neck.

How can someone tell by looking at a photo that the bass has a set neck? Is it only on a few particular models?

dog, look at this photo from the link to the ebay listing on the original post:
See how the heel of the neck is not flush with the body? Now look at your bass - if it's a neck-through, it will be flush there.
EDIT: P.S., if it's a more transparent finish, you can also tell by the fact that a set neck will have a single center seam in the body, rather than being able to see the 2 body wings glued on to the through-neck.

You're right...it must've been the set of my neck that threw my headstock off. My sustain's not what it used to be, either...
