Those set neck 4001S basses do not fall short on sound and playability. They rock!
My '81 4001S has a very thin neck.

How can someone tell by looking at a photo that the bass has a set neck? Is it only on a few particular models?

dog, look at this photo from the link to the ebay listing on the original post: See how the heel of the neck is not flush with the body? Now look at your bass - if it's a neck-through, it will be flush there.

EDIT: P.S., if it's a more transparent finish, you can also tell by the fact that a set neck will have a single center seam in the body, rather than being able to see the 2 body wings glued on to the through-neck.

Man! Talk about feeling stupid. Is this one of those "plain as the nose on my face" things, or is it a "can't see the woods because of the trees" thing?

You're right...it must've been the set of my neck that threw my headstock off. My sustain's not what it used to be, either...
