Initially, The Beach Boys, with their squeaky-clean image, seemed unlikely as psychedelic types. Their music, however, grew more psychedelic and experimental, perhaps due in part to writer/producer/arranger Brian Wilson's increased drug usage and burgeoning mental illness. In 1966, responding to the Beatles' innovations, they produced their album Pet Sounds and later that year had a massive hit with the psychedelic single "Good Vibrations"

This is no fair because I've already posted this elsewhere (not to horn in) but I thought it bears repeating since this band preceded the Dead and the Airplane and all those guys in performing roots-based drug-enhanced extended-jam dance-yer-butt-off rock&roll shows. The Charlatans, rocking out at the Red Dog Saloon in late 1964:
Charlatans featuring Mike Wilhelm showing 'em how to do it in the very early days of Psychedelia.
When I listened to that I thought "that doesn't sound psychedelic,it sounds like Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks!" Then I read about the The Charlatans! Very cool, thanks for posting that Kira.
