I used to own an Epiphone Les Paul 12 string. I replaced the machine heads and put a set of Phat Cats in it and it was actually really nice.

I'd try a Gretsch 12 string,never played one though so don't really know what the neck feels like,
but i'm sure it sounds great.
Or maybe an old Burns Double Six.

Fender Squier Venus XII. Unique design, single coils, and clean sound. Available on the used market for $500 or thereabouts.

I suppose you could call a mid-'60s Fender XII, "affordable" if "affordable" meant $2500.00+

And they are a bit large and neck-heavy...

I never thought to consider a Fender Strat XII "classic" in the sense of "vintage" or "time-tested", but that's because I'm an elder dude. Perhaps "future classic" in my way of seeing things.

I'd put a pickup in my Guild 12-string acoustic, although its pretty loud as it is. That guitar is great!

When I heard an electric 12 string being played on Matthew Sweets latest album, given his association with the company, I just assumed it was a Rick.

It sounds wonderful, but turns out it's a fender of some description!

Huh? Sure that's affordable. Heck, that's cheaper than most Vintage hollowbody Rics (and many solids too....), and cheaper than just about any non-student model Vintage Fender.

I'd definitely say that a Vintage Electric XII at $2500 is a solid deal for a vintage guitar (plus, they are somewhat rare...compared to a strat/tele/JM/jag etc..)

I had an 88 Strat 12, bridge pickup(ice pick)was unusable, changed out the pickup, pretty good guitar. Still have a Danelectro Mosrite looking 12 string that I heavily modified, and was great for when I needed a 12 string electric. It's gathered a lot of dust since the 360/12 came to town. A friend of mine has the 60s hockey stick Fender 12 and it was like grappling a telephone pole to me. I hear Carvin makes a nice 12 string electric as well.

Of course, the Vox and Gretsch models would be preferable, as would the winning lottery ticket needed to buy a proper one.

I LOVE those Vox 12's. Good for you Funny thing seeing this thread, because I may have to find an alternate to my Ric 12's.
Our band is sometimes booked for pool-parties in the summer. As you all know, playing near a pool on humid summer days is bad news
because of chlorine, which will severely damage the finish. I've contemplated the strat 12 because of that indestructible finish fender uses.
Like epoxy paint (believe it's actually polyurethane?). Anyway, it's not the ultimate tone-wise but will get me by for the tunes at a gig.
