It's really quite simple, m'boy - mine has the nicer binding, inlays, and pickguard.

I do have a white matching pickguard, I just happen to like this one better.

Here is a pic of the bass with the white guard but with the stock pickups.

Ok....
Heres my modded 74 player
It has a aluminum bassplate for the treble pickup and a stainless low profile lookalike treble pickup cover. The treble pickup is a Sergio rewound 70s higain that had a broken magnet (glued back together).
It also sports a HB-1 in the neck that has a coil tap that activated whenever the tone control is turned all the way up.
Machines are new and the TRC and scratch plate were made by me (Simple economics, but still looking for a 74 plexi trc..) Plenty of wood repair as well!
It's beat up but sounds as good as any out there....

I usually do not impulse buy, but when I saw the photo of my bass on the dealer's website with those great FW inlays, well, ...................
You really do need a JG 4003 to complement your new AFG 4003.

Eden, how well do the HB-1 and the Sèrgio hi-gain match up?

Really, really well!
If you use the HB in single coil it sounds like a cross between a 70's hi-gain and a 60's toaster (I'm not kidding) Mixed with the treble pickup I can get a real nice vintage sound going (clank and chime). If I back the neck tone off just a bit the full coil HB comes in and with every thing up it sounds more 4003ish (Growl and wallop)
If you solo the neck pickup and turn the tone down it will do a sort of refined EB-3 sound (with out all of those nasty hot spots in the sound) Very smooth..
A mod I thought I would never like (I'm a diehard toaster fan) but its great!

Yes, describing sonic events....
"THe buttery raptured smoothness as the treble was taken down a click, produced a nice mid-range hump-bump
which was only elaborated by the finesse of the somewhat intensified 56mf cap which I supplanted with a newer
Sov-Pop version, indcluding reducing the polycellulene of the windings on the (original) Mallory Xformers."
Like that.

this is why we have so much fun with our basses...I know that there are TONS of them out there with old mods that make the purists squirm....but who cares?!? Someone had to love the bass to mod it...that's how mine is...I can see why...out of 82 Rics that I have had, this one ranks in the top 5 and will be staying for quite some time...
