Must be my imagination or aging eyesight, then.

I'm sure Dale told me that new checker binding is different size than the original stuff.
The binding on that bass looks pretty fresh...just a curiosity is all.
Different height (raw) perhaps, but not thickness--the area that's exposed.

The white portion of old CB often looks yellowed and translucent. This is slight deterioration of the celluloid over decades. New CB looks pure white/black.
Thanks, Paul.
It appears to me that the thickness (area exposed) is what looks smaller on that '71MG.
I thought I saw it that way, with the thought that the binding looked a little too white for the age of the bass and maybe it had been replaced. Apparently I am seeing things.
Not the first time.

Well no cool binding or shoes or toaster here - but since I first laid hands on it in Augest of '74 this has been MY bass. I still haven't meet a bass yet where the neck feels just so damned right! My '93 4004L8 come close but just not quite the same. The 4001 is where it is at (as far as I'm concerned)... that's my story and I'm sticking to it! Thanks for posting the article Mark!!!

My apologies to all but the portion of Marks original post that said "links to readable pages -" has been removed because of copyright and other legal concerns. Mark is aware of this necessary change to his original post and he is onside with it.

Thanks again for your assistance Mark.

Tom, my late '75 4001 must have had the neck made by the same person - like you said, it just fits.
