Peter,
Well, the Ric was there in the store along with the Ovation so I only had those two to compare. The Ovation just played better all the way around, I didn't have to fight with it. I imagine if I'd bought the Ric 12 string and had someone who knows what they're doing set it up properly (including some sort of 12 saddle bridge) then I'd be very happy with it. As it was, my wife thought I was out buying a new TV. She just hasn't gotten the same enjoyment out of the Ovation for some reason.
Being predominantly a bass player, I didn't/don't really know anything about the Ric 12 string bridges. They actually have some with 12 individual saddles?
If so, then you'd think they'd make the 8 saddle version bridge for the bass.

For the record, I've had an '82 Rick 8string since December, and I really am impressed with it's versitility.
The first thing I did was drop the $60 or whatever it is on Rick strings--what an improvement... The feel and and action improved at least 60%. I would *highly* recommend making this investment, and then experimenting with combinations from there. But I can't imagine anyone but a Rotosound nut being unhappy with the feel of the mfg's strings.
Unless I was playing in a power trio or in a band that had a very thoughtful rhythm guitarist (we all know how rare those are, they're all looking to solo), any eight string might be too much. But for versitility, the Rick can't be beat.
