Good references, Dan. I recall that comment by JH and the additional comments over the last few years re: the Lambert vs. the RIC scheme.

I suspect the "reference" '58 mule JH refers to, is the disassembled husk hanging on his office wall...

Pity that it wasn't hanging in there during the 75th, I would have remembered that one for sure. 'Husk' is apt, Paul. Pretty tired-looking in the pics floating around of it.

Well-------seems my question has opened up alot of discussion, particulary about John Lennon's alleged mods. My interest in this subject had nothing to do with what Lennon may or may not have done to V81. I was over on the Rickenbacker Forums and noticed a question from someone about "low output in the bridge pickup of their C58" which seems to be a fairly common question/complaint about these guitars until one realizes (as several folks on this forum were kind enough to straighten me out on several weeks ago) that that is how they are designed. One of the responses on the recent (March 3) Rick Forums was from John Hall who stated: "Disconnecting the middle pickup will also balance out the pickups better and, in my opinion, make this a better guitar." This statement was what spurred my question about the disconnect

Looks pretty much like it, Dan, although it's cleaned up now, and (oddly, perhaps?) if it is the same one, I don't recall noticing the tailpiece rout.
