You are confusing two rods with one. There are two individual truss rods in your guitar; each one has one threaded end and one blunt end that is shorter than the treaded end. Each of the two nuts you see are on one of each rod.

Yes, you are right, I just found some pictures. I'd never taken my rods out, and when I just now got one replacement one, I was confused by its shape. A big "never mind" from me

I'm no expert, but it sounds like you just described one of my truss rods. It looks like a giant bobby pin with threads on the longer end. It's flat on two sides with rounded edges on the other two.
