Joey, I think that they'd be considered permanent until the next set of D'Addarios....
When I first got my 4004L, the previous owner had the D'Addario half rounds (I think they call them)... really nice sound!

Joey, Guy - yes, Wise... man that is a stretch! Ok - I play Ric basses and I married my wife - I was ‘wise’ twice thus far!
But the D'Addario strings are where it is at as far as I'm concerned - I even make up a custom set for my 4004L8. My next fave sets are Rickenbacker strings.

Thanks for all the help.
Only trouble with the Ric strings is that in the UK they retail for about $42!
Any idea which variation of the D'Addario's, Rickenbacker fit?

Iain, most of us that use D'Addario strings on our Ricks use either the EXL-170 set for nickel round wound or the EPS-170 set for stainless steel round wound.

Iain - what Joey says! the EXL170s are what I run on my 4001, on my 4003s5 I like EXL220-5 and on the 4004L8 I start with a EXL220 and add some octaves. Like i said the 4004L can with some DAddario half-rounds and it sounded good! But then how is it going to sound bad? After all it is a Ric!!!
here is the Just Strings link - they do ship overseas.... to give you an idea of the options -

Thanks fellas. That's some sound advice there.
I'll get searching.....!
I'm happy with the Elites on my 4003, but I was concerned about how they will fare on my new 4004.
I'm going to go for some of the D'addarios. They are available in the UK, and a lot less than the Ric strings!!
